"Falcons are Fabulous" is a long-standing tradition at Clearfield High School where we raise money around Christmas time for those in need! Every year a different cause is selected! This year in celebration of Clearfield High's 50 Year Anniversary, we have decided to "GO BIG" and do something out of the ordinary! The worth-while cause we have chosen to support is "Project Guatemala" in partnership with Charity Anywhere Foundation. With the help of generous local businesses and individuals we plan to build, furnish, staff, and support a free daycare for impoverished children of single mothers in Guatemala. This is our biggest project yet! We need your help to make it a success!
Guatemala has one of the lowest literacy rates and standards of living in all of Latin America. As in any such country, single mothers and their children suffer greatly as they struggle for survival. These women are qualified for only the most menial and low-paying jobs. Their subsistent wages do not allow for professional child care, and the government does little to help. Most of these young mothers have several children and face difficult decisions with regard to childcare. While mothers customarily work with their infants on their backs, older children are often left to endure neglect and terrible abuse at the hands of "caregivers" completely unfit for the task. When even this unsatisfactory option is unavailable, children are left to wander the streets or are locked in their homes for the duration of the work day, often with tragic results.
Recently, a devastated mother struggled to recount how she had left her six year old daughter in the care of her nine year old son. She returned from work to find that both of her children had burned to death in her absence. The padlock prevented their escape or rescue. The cause of the fire was never determined. Perhaps it was the candles, or perhaps it was the indoor cooking fire. Whatever the cause, what is certain is that no child should have to suffer such a terrifying and horrible death. It is the intent of this project to provide the alternative to such avoidable tragedies.
An Idea Was Born:
After witnessing this disturbing problem in her poor Guatemalan community, Melba decided to do what she could to help these kids! She took 30 of the neighborhood kids who were in the most danger into her home for the workday. "Caritas Felices" (the original daycare) was born! She had no food, entertainment, books, toys, etc to give them but they were happy to be safe with a loving caretaker and friends to play with! The first time we visited these kids, they stood against the wall waiting for us to tell them what to do. They are the most grateful, adorable, well-behaved kids! We have seen the huge impact this simple daycare has had on the lives of these kids and want to help kids just like these in other rural communities!
The main goals of this project are:
1. To provide a safe and positive learning environment
2. To teach them the critical basic reading, writing, and math skills that can make all the difference in their futures, and give them the key to breaking free of the poverty cycle.
3. To provide at least one nutritious meal a day! These kids are often left to worry about where, when, and even if they will be able to find their next meal.
Our main goal in this project is to better the lives of these humble kids! We strive to lift their burdens and bring some happiness and hope into their hard lives!
1. How much will this cost? Each Daycare Specifically?
*A simple Daycare costs about $15,000. This includes property, building supplies, and basic necessities. For a little bit more, we can start to add fun features like a small library, reading corner, playground, computer lab, etc.
2. How much will it cost to sustain these Daycares?
* We figure it will cost about $600 a month. This would go to employing a certified teacher (about $1.40 per hour), food, utilities, and other expenses. We are looking for businesses that would like to sponsor (completely or in-part) these daycares on a month to month basis.
3. How will we know our money is going to this cause?
*Our partner, Charity Anywhere Foundation is a registered 501c3 and therefore has transparent records. We can show you exactly what your money has gone to. Also, no one is employed as a project director, so that salary is not coming out of our funds like it does in some Charities.
4. How many Daycares do you plan to build/support?
*As of now, we are planning on supporting the existing daycare, Caritas Felices, a new one that we will build from the ground up, and another one that we are hoping to establish by fixing up an existing building. In the future we would like to expand and help even more kids, but that depends on the funds available.
5. Whis is the Trip to Guatemala all about?
*There is a group of 45 High School Students and 10 Adults going down to Guatemala for 2 weeks to bild these daycares and perform other community services. They leave December 27, 2010. We are also sending down a shipping container full of donated clothes, toys, shoes, bulk food, medical supplies, etc. that we will be distributing. If you have anything you would like to donate, let us know or you can drop it off at our big donation day on Saturday, December 4th, at Clearfield High School.
